Connecting Micro & Nano through social media

Another podcast from COMS2008 – this one a recording of Clive Davenport talking about connecting the micro and nano worlds globally through social media. I apologise that the sound quality is not good – we had interference from the talks next door and it is quite echo-y. However, I hope you are inspired to contribute your thoughts and you feel like you’re here.

Join me at COMS2008

You can listen to ‘Welcome to COMS2008′…..

After watching the the Science Blogging: London Conference unfold online on Saturday, I was inspired to try something similar with the MANCEF – COMS2008 I am attending in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

It started with a relatively simple post on the Bridge8 website, but then I got more ambitious. Included is the podcast of the opening session (thanks Mike) and photos uploaded from my phone to Flickr. And since I’ve been twittering with the tag #mancef-coms or #coms, we realised we’d started to amass some good info. I opened a FriendFeed room and @dnwallace has very generously set up a Yahoo Pipe especially for the event.

You can also visit the offical site to see the program.

I’ll be presenting Wednesday afternoon, so feel free to twitter me questions or participate.

Final panel podcast from Science Blogging Conference

Thanks to Richard and Lisa for getting THIS audio from the final panel session of the Nature’s Science Blogging Conference at the RI in London.

4:15 – 5:30 Embracing change: taking online science into the future
Richard Grant, Cameron Neylon and Peter Murray-Rust. Moderated by Timo Hannay.

The panelists summarise the key themes of the day and provide a look into the future of online communication and collaboration in science. The goal is for attendees to come away with things they can do to enhance communication of science online.

It is a cracker of a session, well worth a listen even tho the levels are a bit dodgey in places. After a lot of two an fro about the value or otherwise as blogs to the reputation and career of scientists there is a fascinating section on citizen science (something that is close to the heart of the sciencegeekspeak.com conglomerate).
Enjoy, spread the word and let’s get people talking about Science!

Episode 1 (testing) – A starting vision

ScienceGeekSpeak Episode 001 (testing)

In this, our first (testing) episode (maybe this is episode -1 ?), Mike and I speak about our plans for the future of ScienceGeekSpeak.

I introduce Bridge8 and our approach to science communications and foresight, including our base in sciences, and our desire to consider a range of perspectives. Mike introduces mikeseyfang.com. Mike is currently doing a consultancy with University of Adelaide on new media. Mike comes from an IT and education background where online communities are well established, but we both struggled to find active online science communities.

This podcast traces our hopes for www.sciencegeekspeak.com. We’re not interested in creating a site or brand for our finanical benefit. We’d like to provide a platform to help scientists share ideas and start authentic conversations. We see 24/7 conversations, audio and chat. We’re interested in substance over style and we’ll help you get started. We can’t wait to hear from you.

Mike Seyfang will be in Adelaide coordinating posts and podcasts to www.sciencegeekspeak.com and Kristin will be commenting from Mexico va LA. we’ll be tagging everything with sciblog. RSS this blog to keep up to date.
